Case Study: Recalcitrant knee pain

A 53-year-old patient was referred by primary physician. Patient is a nurse and competitive runner. Pain level 7-8/10 under patella and radiating medially and posteriorly. She has had 5 months of focused physical therapy with injections and infusions with no improvement. Activities of daily living limited and complains of fatigue.

Acupuncture evaluation found an underlying constitutional weakness due to a hysterectomy 2 years prior. Diagnosis: Qi and blood stagnation and deficiency.

Acupuncture treatment 2 times a week for 2 weeks. 1 acupuncture treatment for 2 weeks. Herbal supplements for underlying deficiency.

Results:

Pain level 2-3/10 with gradual increase in running.

Clinic provides patient with insurance billing form with codes to submit to insurance for reimbursement.
