Breakfast is a very important meal of the day. Over the years, I have found that a lot of my patients skip breakfast and do not eat until lunch. Not only does this weaken the digestive system and create energetic imbalances but increases fatigue and reduces mental clarity.Chinese medicine is unique in many ways and looks at the body both as an energetic and physical being.  From the energetic standpoint each organ system has specific times when their energy is most profound.  The hours of 7am-9am correspond to the Stomach and 9am-11am the Spleen.  The Stomach and Spleen are in charge of the digestion and assimilation of food.When we skip breakfast during this time these organ systems become weakened and less effective. Symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, loose stools, bloating and gas can arise.By including a proper breakfast in the daily routine the Spleen and Stomach organ systems thrive and balance is restored. Below are some recommendations for an energetically and nutritionally sound breakfast.

Steel cut unsweetened oatmeal cooked with fresh or dried fruit such as: blueberries, cherries, raspberries, apples, cranberries, and/or goji berries.

Egg fritata made with lots of vegetables and greens.

Fruit smoothie: this is best during the summer months as it is cooling in property.

Whole grain bread with almond butter or humus.

Miso soup with vegetables and tofu.

Fresh homemade vegetable juices: juiced ginger will benifit digestion.

Rice and vegetables

Muesli and yogurt

For a healthy breakfast choose one of these and accompany with a simple cup of hot herbal tea for a great start to you day.
