Nutrition and Breast Cancer


Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. These numbers are grim and Chinese medicine is a vital partner in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
In addition to acupuncture one of the treatments offered by Chinese medicine for thousands of years is dietary therapy.  So it is exciting to see that American based researchers have found a dietary compound in some foods that kill breast cancer cells. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in June 2103, a flavoniod called Apigenin found in fruits and vegetables was shown to be able to switch on the process of apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cultured breast cancer cells. Foods that are most abundant in apigenin are chamomile tea, parsley and celery.
