Herbal vaginal steams, or “bajos” as they are called in Spanish, are an old, respected treatment used by Maya midwives and traditional healers in Central America. They have also been called yoni steam baths. Vaginal steams are often recommended as part of the Arvigo Techniques of Mayan Abdominal Therapy® to help cleanse the uterus of blood congestion or stagnation, and are helpful in treating conditions such as dysmennorhea (painful menstrual cycles), amennorhea (absence of menstrual cycle), ovarian cysts, fibroids and endometriosis.
Vaginal steams baths are also recommended in many cultures after giving birth to help increase energy and improve pelvic tone. The steams help to heal the pelvic floor and clear the uterine lining, and can be used to soften scars associated with childbirth or pelvic surgery in the perineum. The steam and healing property of the herbs bring blood flow, circulation and nourishment to the pelvic floor and perineum to increase pelvic tone for all women.
At ilumina, we use a traditional Korean vaginal steamer which is a common household item in many parts of Asia. The electric steamer holds a cup of water which heats and steams under a cup of herbs that we choose for you. A blend of organic, natural herbs or a combination of traditional Chinese Herbs is chosen based on symptoms and treatment outcomes. Clients sit on a seat that has a vent which can be opened or closed by the client to control the amount of steam emitted. In a private room, clients are covered by a special drape for the duration of the steam and can listen to calming music or a guided meditation.
Vaginal steams are recommended just prior to or after menstruation, and are offered as a stand alone treatment or in conjunction with the Arvigo Techniques of Mayan Abdominal Therapy®. The treatment takes about 30-40 minutes and the cost is $50. Instructions for at home steams can be given if clients wish to continue the treatments as part of their routine self care.
*Please note, if you are not a current client or patient at ilumina Healing Sanctuary, a detailed consultation will be needed prior to doing the vaginal steam. This would add an additional 30 minutes to the treatment time.
