The Safety of Herbs and Supplements

It is not uncommon for a new patient at ilumina to be nervous about taking Chinese herbs or supplements. This is understandable as we are not living in a society where we have a long history of their use. In many cultures it was your grandmother who gave you herbs as a child and information about them was passed from generation to generation. This is not the case for most people in the United States and what portrayal they do have is often negative stemming from visit to your medical doctor or exposure in the media.

Recently the Alliance for Natural Health International, a United Kingdom based nonprofit, released statistics putting into perspective the risks of taking herbs and natural supplements. The data shows that adverse reactions to pharmaceutical drugs are 62,000 times more likely to kill you than food supplements and 7,750 times more likely to kill you than herbal remedies. The data, which was collected from official sources in the UK and EU, demonstrate that both food supplements and herbal remedies are in the 'super-safe' category of individual risk – meaning risk of death from their consumption is less than 1 in 10 million. Besides drugs and hospital injuries, you're also more likely to die from being struck by lightning or drowning in your bathtub than having a lethal reaction to herbs or supplements.

Catherine Travis, LAc, has 30 years’ experience treating Fibromyalgia. First clinical experience treating Fibromyalgia was in 1982 when treating patients referred from a sports injury physical therapy clinic and as patients referred from a Rheumatology Clinic. At that time most physicians believed that the patient’s pain was a result of psychological problems. She worked with leading researcher Deirdre Buchwald, MD. at Harborview Hospital’s Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Clinic

Catherine has devoted years of study in both eastern and western biomedicine to find treatments that are effective for her patients with pain, fatigue, insomnia and depression. She brings an integration of both Eastern and Western Biomedicine.
