Acupuncture and IVF: Optimizing Egg Retrieval with Traditional Healing

Acupuncture has become increasingly recognized in the world of IVF, especially after a well-known study demonstrated that live birth rates significantly increased when a specific acupuncture protocol was applied before and after embryo transfer. This study popularized the Paulus Protocol, a targeted acupuncture approach aimed at improving outcomes on transfer day.

While this protocol is widely used, as acupuncturists, we’ve known for years that the real benefits of acupuncture start much earlier in the IVF process—before even beginning the egg retrieval cycle. Ideally, if timing permits, the gold standard for is three months of acupuncture preparation before starting IVF. This allows us to optimize the body’s natural balance and energy flow in preparation for the treatment ahead.

However, the landscape of acupuncture for retrieval and IVF expanded further with the E. Stener-Victoran study, which showed that just eight acupuncture treatments on the back—with the use of Electro-Stimulation—could significantly improve egg retrieval outcomes. Based on these findings, we typically recommend acupuncture treatments on both sides of the body leading up to egg retrieval. The timing and frequency of these sessions can vary depending on where a patient is in their IVF journey, but in general, we recommend more frequent acupuncture during the 10-12 day stimulation period while on hormone injections.

The IVF process can be a physical and emotional roller coaster, and acupuncture provides a powerful way to support the body through it. Regular acupuncture sessions help the body maintain a relaxed, parasympathetic state, which is crucial for optimizing all bodily functions, including the reproductive system. When the body is in a relaxed state, it’s better able to circulate blood freely, without stress-induced constriction of blood vessels. This ensures that the reproductive organs receive the optimal flow of nutrients and oxygen, crucial for egg quality and overall fertility.

Along with acupuncture, we also recommend a diet rich in antioxidants (such as resveratrol) and a range of high-quality supplements designed to support egg retrieval. Together, these treatments and lifestyle adjustments help create the best possible conditions for success.

Key Takeaways:

  • Acupuncture, especially when applied early in the IVF process, can improve outcomes significantly.
  • The Paulus Protocol and E. Stener-Victoran study have provided valuable insight into the benefits of acupuncture on embryo transfer and egg retrieval.
  • Regular acupuncture during the stimulation phase helps the body remain relaxed and supports circulation to the reproductive organs.
  • A diet high in antioxidants and appropriate supplements can further optimize the success of egg retrieval.
